Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels which include coronary heart disease (CHD), cerebrovascular disease, peripheral arterial disease, rheumatic heart disease, congenital heart disease, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Cardiovascular diseases became one of the major contributors to morbidity and mortality. Every year it is estimated that 17 million people generally die because of a heart and blood vessel disease, mostly from heart attacks and strokes (WHO, 2020).
Hypertension is a serious medical condition and is quite dangerous worldwide. It’s because hypertension is a major risk factor that leads to cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack, heart failure, stroke and kidney disease. During 2016, ischemic heart disease and stroke became the two lead causes of death in the world (WHO, 2018).
Currently, Indonesia still has limited research on the quality of life with a specific cardiovascular disease. This made the data become less comprehensive, such as only in the elderly age group. For this reason, CIMSA FK Unila held a webinar to educate people, so that it increases public knowledge and awareness about cardiovascular diseases including high blood pressure in Indonesia.
This event was held from September 10th to October 1st, 2021. The series of events consisted of an Air Campaign, Pre-activity Training, and Webinar. The Air Campaign was done by volunteers in which they posted twibbons and campaign posters throughout the duration of the event. Still in the Air Campaign period, on September 11th, there was also Pre-activity Training attended by the Organizing Committee and Volunteers. During this event we provided basic knowledge about cardiovascular diseases, mainly hypertension, as well as a tutoring session to explore the materials. Meanwhile, the Webinar was held on September 18th and took on the topic of hypertension given by dr. Nuka Meredlona, Sp.JP, FIHA from the Indonesian Association of Cardiovascular Specialists, Lampung. Before we began the webinar, we engaged with the participant by doing small exercises.
Although many people have heard about cardiovascular diseases, there are still many misconceptions and inappropriate treatments in response to or as an effort to prevent this disease. Therefore, let’s raise awareness of cardiovascular health together and prevent the disease from an early age.
